The Overlord of the great Ashanti Kingdom, his Royal Majesty Otumfour Osei Tutu II has taken steps to tackle festering cancer in Ghana football which threatens the future of football in the country.
The Asantehene has admonished the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to ensure that only the best of the best and most deserving of footballers are called up to represent the country in the National team.
He noted that the now accepted norm of picking players to represent the country in the national team based on favouritism and what have you is beginning to show in the poor showing of the Black Stars at international tournaments.
Otumfour Osei Tutu II made this observation and statement to the Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku and his entourage as they paid a courtesy call on him at the Manhyia Palace.
“Many of the children really know how to play football and I’m not talking about only Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak players because Aduana Stars and the other also have good players,” he said.
“There are those in the hinterlands too who are very good so if we remain truthful and award them with call-ups deservingly, it will also help push their careers.
“Black Stars call-ups should not be about favouritism but we should look for the ones who can really help the team. We should look at the quality and not where they are coming from or the clubs they play for. It should not also be about the popularity of the player because all these go against the team.”
